eating chocolates and drinking alcohol during the holidays reminded me of a night in LA when i wanted to do a bunch of stuff, but was so tired from having done a bunch of stuff all day,

i know, that was pretty vague- not even sure why eating chocolates made me think of that,

today, i walked out and it looked like this everywhere- there wasn’t a single thing not covered in ice, not many people were out and it was kind of nice,

i finished this yesterday, it looks like an animal of some sort- but i can’t decide which- what does one think of when they…

Fables

I’ve had to keep quiet about this for quite some time, but I’ve finally been given the go ahead to share the news. A few months ago, I received a call from Shelly Bond, Editor at Vertigo Comics, and Bill Willingham. Along with asking me to take part in the Fairest In All The Land OGN, they offered me the job of Cover artist for the comic series Fables

I’m humbled and honoured to be asked to take on such a prestigious role, for such a beloved series. It has been a surreal experience.

There are some people in particular that I would like to offer my gratitude to. Firstly, Bill and Shelly for even considering me, and trusting me to help continue this tale, along with the entire Fables Family. Dani Vulnavia and Stephanie Cooke. Supporters, collaborators, and above all friends. Not possible with them. And João Ruas for offering such kind words of encouragement, I hope I’m able to faithfully continue the masterful work you’ve done.

As many of you have read in the past few weeks, it was announced that the series is coming to a close at issue 150. I hope that I’m able to offer the same charm and grandeur to the covers that the series has become famous for as we bring this story to it’s conclusion.

My first cover for the series is for Issue 139. Please follow the link below to read the full details on the Vertigo site.

Gave a talk yesterday at Tessar Lo’s QRST Creative Workshop. Honored to have been asked and take part in the class (which focused on the figure). Really inspiring session. Here are some of the favorites from the class. Thanks again T!

jhonnymcjhon asked: what is the best time of year to send out illustration promos in the mail? I just had my first foldout promo made and Im worried because its the holiday season now and i dont want it to be overlooked

I’ve been told there are *prime* months to send, where Publishers, ADs, Editors, etc. are gearing up for projects and starting to get their ducks in a row (namely February, April, June, September). Holiday themed promos are great~ I personally love getting Christmas cards, but you do run the risk of having your promo fall in amongst the deluge of mail they’re most likely receiving. A little bit before or after the *big events* in a year would be recommended.

That said, I’ve never been one for the mass promo blast—-I think the strength of promos lies in specificity and frequency; making sure your work and promo are appropriate for the person you’re sending it to (I like to go as far as specifically targeting one particular Cient/Art Director/Editor/Title to work for) and really doing your best to get your work in front of them to try and build a familiarity (and hopefully a relationship). And the other part of that is to be consistent and visible to them—if that means keeping your online channels updated and sending a promo everything couple of months, or an email every 5 months with new work and a kind (but brief) message. All of that to say, anytime is a great time to send a promo…..if you’re specific about who you’re sending it to.

Anonymous asked: why have you been keeping all your recent work secret? I keep checking your blog to se if you've posted any of the finished pieces of what you post on here but it has been updated in months :(

It’s partially due to a busy schedule, and in part I became a little tired (bored) of the way I was posting my work online. I’ve been wanting to do an overhaul of everything (including a full switch over to tumblr), but I lucked into a busy streak…and have been caught up with the “creation” part of work and (sadly) neglecting the “sharing” part.

Recently though, I’ve been trying to metaphorically “put my house in order”, so hopefully in the next little bit I’ll be able to get everything together again in a proper way.

Also, one major reason why I haven’t shared— I’ve been busy working on a project for a while now that’s involved a fair amount of secrecy. We haven’t been given the Okay to announce yet. But if I can be frank about it, it’s really exciting! I can’t wait to share it with people :)

—Thank you for this message! I get pretty caught up much of the time, these kinds of things are really nice, and help get me out of my head. Too bad you didn’t post with a name/link, I can’t send Anonymous prints/postcards ;P
